Voyage of Discovery:

 a) The narrator along with his eldest son Fritz and their dog Turk went to explore the island.

b) They followed the course of the river because, after a few hours into their journey, they
realized that the banks of the river were very steep and there was no real path on the
other side.

c) All the children were not taken to the journey because it would become difficult for the
narrator and his eldest son Fritz to defend all of them in any danger.

d) The gourd’s rind could be used to make utensils like plates, dishes, basins and flasks.

e) The narrator taught his son to cut the gourd with a bit of string, which would cut it more
equally than a knife.


Night Fright:

a) Fritz was determined to carry sugarcane back home because he wanted his mother and
Ernest to enjoy the sweet, juicy sugarcanes.

b) The narrator’s dog, Turk killed the monkey.

c) The narrator smiled because the young monkey whose mother had been killed by Turk
sprung nimbly on Fritz’s shoulders and fastened his feet in his stiff curls. Despite Fritz’s
cries and vigorous shaking the monkey did not let go of its hold.

d) Jack was filled with amusement when he saw the monkey whereas, little Franz was
hesitant to touch it and was more interested in knowing if his father and brother had
brought something more interesting for him, other than the monkey.

e) A dozen jackals had surrounded the narrator’s dogs. The barking of the dogs and the

commotion of the fowls outside his tent awakened the narrator from his sleep.
