The Sledge: Refer to TB pg 27.
a) The narrator wanted to build a sledge as that would help them to carry heavy things back
from the store house.
b) The chest contained some sailors’ dresses and some linen.
c) Ernest and the narrator brought casks of butter, cheese a small barrel of gunpowder,
different instruments and some shot back from the store house.
d) Ernest shot and killed the kangaroo which initially looked like an unusual animal that
jumped around Flora.
e) It is important to study natural history because it helps us to classify plants and animals
according to their characteristic marks.




The Last of the Wreck: Refer to TB pg 30.
a) The narrator left the sledge in the woods because he wanted to go a little further into the
land to ascertain if there was anything useful for them beyond the wall of rocks.
b) The narrator and his son discovered some berries that were covered with wax. The wax of
these berries when boiled could be used to make candles. Then they found a tree that
bore fruits that looked like wild figs. The trunk of these trees oozed gum which became
immediately hardened by the air. They discovered that the tree was India rubber. Finally
they spotted some trees that looked like sago palm. On tasting it the narrator discovered
that it was indeed sago that they had eaten in Europe. These were the three important
discoveries made by the narrator and his son.
c) The narrator emptied a large gourd and filled it with cream. He then placed it on a piece of
sail cloth with four corners and tied each corner to a stake and requested his boys to
stand beside it and shake it. The boys performed the task while singing and laughing and
within an hour the cream had turned into butter.
d) After the last trip to the wreck, the narrator decided to blow up the wreck so that the
timbers might themselves drift ashore.
e) The narrator and his three sons brought chest of clothes and whatever remained of the
ammunition such as powder and shot from the wreck. They collected things like doors,
windows, locks and bolts from the wreck and brought them ashore.
